New iPhone Cases - iPhone 6 Making Big Changes
A new iPhone has officially been announced and is bringing some big changes to the accessory market, something that iPhone are growing increasingly familiar with.
Unlike 2013's iPhone 5S, which worked with almost all of the 5's accessories and cases, the iPhone 6 will be a totally new iPhone that will come in two sizes one with a 4.7" screen and the larger with a whopping 5.5" screen. Both the largest screens Apple has made to date. Given the larger size and a few key changes phone case and accessory manufacturers are going to have to make some changes.
With the larger 5.5" iPhone it is likely that the market for folio-style cases will really take off and become a popular demand. This is similar to the increased demand that we saw for the Samsung Galaxy S5 and its big brother the Note 3.
Another change is to the camera which protrudes slightly from the phone which will alter the design of cases to be thick enough to cover the camera so its not to rest on the lens.
What won't change
1. Touch ID
Both phones include this feature from the iPhone 5s, which creates a challenge for rugged cases that cover the iPhone's Home button. Several rugged case manufacturers use a special membrane to cover the home button in and retain Touch ID functionality. It works better than you'd think, but isn't perfect.
2. Bluetooth, Airplay and Wi-Fi
All existing wireless accessories (speakers, headphones, etc.) should still work as is.
3. Headphone jack
The standard 3.5mm jack has survived, so all of your existing wired headphones, headsets, and patch cables should still work.
4. Lightning jack
There were no physical changes so existing cables and some docks should still work.
