Filling Out an Online Application
Most companies provide an online application which can be convenient to people that plan to apply to many different jobs at once. But those that are new to looking for a job online might not be familiar with how to approach these applications. Companies will often simply search applications for the information they want, so you need to make sure you have structured your responses in a way that is guaranteed to get you noticed.
Make Sure the Writing is Solid
Any application you send to a company should be error-free. If you are not confident in your typing or spelling skills, make sure you run a spelling and grammar check on your responses before hitting the submit button. Also make sure you proofread all of your answers before completing your resume. You want to make sure all of your responses sound professional and truly address the questions you have been asked.
Do not leave portions of the application blank unless you are specifically told you should. For example, those that have not been convicted can skip the space where they might have to explain these charges, but you should not skip the space that asks for your contact information. Even if you feel that spaces are redundant or do not apply to you, an application that has not been filled out completely looks rushed and sloppy.
Make Yourself Identifiable
Read the job description carefully before you start filling out your application. If job skills or requirements were listed in the job posting, you can be sure that the HR department is looking for resumes that match. If you will be talking about your own skills, make sure you use wording that matches the post to make it clear that you have done your research. Also be sure you are not sending in an application for a position that you are clearly not qualified for. This will make you look bad, and might make a company hesitate about hiring you if you apply for a different position later.
If you are given the opportunity to submit a cover letter with your application, make sure that it is original. Sending out a form letter makes you look lazy, which is the last thing you want when seeking employment. Discuss items mentioned in the job description and relate them back to your skill set. This is your opportunity not only to talk about the fact that you want the job, but why you would be right for it, so take full advantage.
Make sure your social media profile is updated and up to professional standards. Any company that is tech savvy enough to use online applications will probably look up candidates they are interested in on their social media accounts before they get called into an interview. If you are constantly posting about how you dislike your current job, or it looks like you never bother to post at all, these can be red flags to employers. Clean up your profile to make yourself look well-rounded and thoughtful and you may be surprised as to the result.
