January Birthstone The Garnet
It is said that Gemstones are traditionally used as birthstones but you can wear them anyway you like. Let's start with January and the Garnet.
Garnets light up the night to protect their owners from nightmares. Garnets have long been carried by travelers to protect against accidents far from home. Such as protection from snake bites. They can also find directional guidance in the dark. People who wear it might see an increase in self image,willpower and it is also said to have an increase in energy levels. Nervous people may feel calmer. Garnet is the birthstone for January but with its stunning variety of colors and its mystical powers it has been given as a gift for all occasions for centuries. Not just as a birthstone In fact, for any occasion you could think of. Gemstones are for all seasons.
If you ask anyone what the birthstone color is for January they will tell you it is Garnet or Deep red. But did you know that garnets come in other colors too? Such as vibrant greens of the Russian Demantoid and African Tsavorite. They are also seen in Oranges and browns and subtle colors like Pinks and purples. You may not be able to pronounce some of the words of the technical meaning of the Garnet, but you can just look at it and see how beautiful some of them can be.
While researching material for this article I found , If a secondary color of January birthstone has to be named, that would be green. Emerald, the birthstone of January in the old Tibetan calendar, is green. The foremost January gemstone, garnet, likewise occurs in green, and is in fact most valuable in its green variety called Demantoid. Serpent stone is in itself an uncertain gemstone; hence, using the birthstone for January in the Hindu calendar to determine the January stone color would present more questions than answers.

Since before history began some gemstones have really been treasured.
From earliest times, gemstones have been valued for their beauty and rarity. Both ancient Indians and Babylonians believed that certain gems carried strange and wonderful cosmological powers. It may have been the Assyrians who first attached meanings to desired gems as early as 1400 B.C.
Speaking of red for January, The color can really pop. Look at color chart for a January Garnet you will invariably get the different shades of red,anywhere from an orange red to a deep dark red. It's also said that they come in every color of the rainbow except blue. Imagine that!
