A Quick Guide on the AC8050-1 Form
If you are a fan of aviation, it is probably an interest you have held for a long time. Perhaps since you were a child, you looked up at the skies with wonderment as airplanes crossed the big blue expanse. As you got older, maybe you began studying and completing the necessary coursework to obtain your pilot’s license. After you completed your in-cockpit instruction and passed the subsequent exam, you were ready to cruise above the clouds. Of course, to truly make the most of this privilege, it is helpful to own your own aircraft. With a multitude of different makes and models available on the open market, it takes a fair amount of research and due diligence to find the right plane for you. Once you locate a seller and negotiate a fair price, you are almost cleared for takeoff–you just need to complete an AC8050-1 form with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Fortunately, an online service such as ours at the National Aviation Center can help.
In some ways, buying an airplane is not too dissimilar from buying a motor vehicle. For instance, you need to have a license and you will have to register the aircraft with a central authority. The FAA maintains a thorough and comprehensive database of all airplanes that operate in the airspace above the United States. They do this in addition to managing air traffic control and issuing pilot licenses. In a nutshell, the FAA wears a lot of important hats, and as a responsible aircraft owner, you can expect to need to work with them from time to time. For most plane owners, this begins with filing a Form AC8050-1 – Aircraft Registration Application, and filling out this document using our streamlined web forms can typically be done with just a few clicks. Read on to learn more.
How to Complete a Form AC8050-1
With the keys to your new aircraft in your hands, you are understandably pretty eager to get up in the air. Before you are cleared for takeoff, though, you will want to make sure your plane is clean, in good working order, and current on its registration. If you are registering your plane for the first time, you will need to process the proper application document. This form should include your name and address, as well as the make, model, and a serial number of your aircraft. Once issued, your registration will be valid for a period of three years. Six months before registration is due to expire, the FAA will send you a renewal reminder containing a security code that will need to be entered on your renewal request. For their part, the FAA will send a second reminder eight weeks out.
